IN LOVING MEMORY
Fredonnia Price
Alpha Phi Chapter exists because of Fredonnia Price. With determination, warmth and an unshakable belief in nurses, she brought Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. to Stockton — and spent the rest of her life helping it flourish.
A life in nursing
Fredonnia’s nursing career began as a Certified Nurse Assistant. She went on to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse and, in 1978, a Registered Nurse.
Bringing Chi Eta Phi to Stockton
In 1991, Fredonnia began attending public events hosted by the sorority’s Mu Chi Chapter in Los Angeles. The more she learned, the more excited she became. She pursued membership, driving 360 miles to Los Angeles for monthly meetings and classes.
Her service project was to recruit registered nurses from the Stockton area to form a new chapter. She took it on with enthusiasm, talking to every registered nurse she knew. Most had never heard of the organization — but, undaunted, Fredonnia overcame every obstacle. On May 30, 1992, Alpha Phi Chapter was chartered, and it has been a dynamic, active part of the community ever since.
Our charter president
As Alpha Phi’s first president, Fredonnia was wholly devoted to the sorority and its purposes. She was committed to recognizing nurses for their service and always looked for opportunities to honor them individually. Through her efforts, several chapter members were recognized by the sorority’s Southwest Region, and she was remarkably successful at finding deserving candidates for our nursing scholarships.
A legacy beyond Stockton
Fredonnia was instrumental in forming two Chi Eta Phi chapters in Oakland, California — the Omicron Phi graduate chapter and the Omicron Phi Beta undergraduate chapter. She encouraged Omicron Phi Basileus Dawn Dailey to present her work with the national SIDS campaign to the Boulé board and membership, which led the organization, under National President Dana Lopez, to adopt it as a national Chi Eta Phi campaign. She was also instrumental in the national organization’s funding of the Judi Davis Bone Marrow campaign.
Beyond Chi Eta Phi, she served with the National Council of Negro Women, the Black Nurses Association and Packed With Pride, and was an active member of The Christian Life Center in Stockton.
Devoted to the very end
Even in the last stages of her illness, Fredonnia was thinking of the sorority. During her final hospitalization, when she could hardly catch her breath, she spoke of the projects she was working on to make the 2013 Regional Conference in Stockton a success.
Alpha Phi Chapter will forever miss our sister, and we remain ever grateful for her tireless effort to bring us to Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. We extend sweet memories and blessings to her son, Jody Hardge, and to her family, fellow sorority members and friends.
